The similarities to another book that has been out for years are just too much to be coincidental and I just don’t like that from authors. I am not sure if I would read more by this author. I think the most interesting part is that no one picked up that it was way to similar before it was published. You would expect a similar vibe or trope as the authors mentioned, but not the same plot. Schwab and Leigh Bardugo will love this!”. It isn’t a direct copy, more a rewite of the plot of a whole trilogy, squeezed into one book. Schwab’s Shades of Magic series: Thief and prince meet and have to battle a concious form of dark magic that takes over people or makes them disintegrate if they aren’t ‘bad’ enough.

Something I couldn’t shake when reading this book was that it felt awfully similar to V.E. And I have to be honest that the magic types seemed a little excessive when someone uses all three sorts in the same scene or fight. But the beginning of the book suggested that proprio‘s are rare, but more characters seem to have one than not. It may manifest from a personality trait or after something important or life changing happens. I quite liked the magic system as everyone has elemental magic (one element at the time), there is spoken/written magic and people can develop a proprio, a kind of magic ability that specific to the person. The plot itself had a few of these nods aswell, but I can’t tell them as that would just be a spoiler. The world building wasn’t excessive, but it had all these little things that compensated for it.

There is some background history about the nation and the neighbouring one, explaining their relationship and past. I like it has dark parts, interesting characters and nice worldbuilding.

It wasn’t exactly a page turner, but it was an interesting and entertaining read.

I can say that I quite enjoyed this book. ”Magic could not speak, yet interacting with it felt like a conversation, a dance, a story shared with a friend with the ending left up to interpretation.”īefore I begin, we should take a moment to appreciate the alternate cover for this book from the April 2019 Fairyloot box with blue sprayed edges! It is a nice dark blue opposing the original orange/red colour scheme.
